Traditional Turkish with a modern twist @ Turka, Crows Nest

The dining scene in Crows Nest has continued to improve over the last couple of years, so much so that it could possibly be considered the dining hub of the Northern Suburbs. You will find a great deal of variety in the area and many quality restaurants to choose from. On this occasion we are visiting Turka – a Turkish restaurant which occupies a prime corner location. Kitted out to theme with Turkish lamps and furnishings. Described a mezze bar, it is essentially a modern Turkish bar and restaurant selling breakfast, lunch and dinner. The restaurant aims to bring the flavours and delights of Turkish cuisine with a modern twist to Australia.

This is a licensed venue with a unique cocktail list beer, and wine including turkish varieties. We sip on a cocktail as we contemplate what to eat. We were dining in a group with foodie friends Spooning Australia and Sinsydney. dishes here are designed to share and with so much choice a banquet was our best bet.

We first receive a mezze platter with a range of appetisers including dips such as hummus, cacik (the traditional garlic yoghurt), Zeytin ezme (green olive with fetta), Kuru domates ezmesi (sundried tomato) and kozlenmis kirmizi biber (smoked red capsicum). They were all beautiful and freshly prepared but our favourite had to be the green olive. This came with s basket of breads as well as olives, pickled vegetables, artichoke hearts, green beans, stuffed vine leaves and marinated capsicum. We polished this off in no time, but be careful to leave room for the next course!

We then tried a spread full of the hot mezze including tiger prawns, Gallo uni, falafels, marinated chicken and lamb. We also ate this with a huge salad. It was all delicious and they gave extremely generous servings.

For $39 pp, the tasting menu is a great option if you’re not quite sure where to start. There’s plenty of sides as well as a kids menu, so the whole family can go!

We couldn’t go past dessert, which was their original knafeh, baklava and Turkish tea and this was an absolute must order.

The staff are extremely proud of their business, as they should be. They are very hospitable, in particular the owner Alex Buharali for the great hospitality. The staff do their best to provide a great dining experience.

Thanks to Jason from Spooning Australia for arranging and Ompty media for the inviation to dine.
